In mid September, Daniel Ridings, a Swedish randonneur with US roots reached out to a few RUSA members about the global campaign started by Oleg Milhaylik with the Lviv Randonneur club in Mariupol, Ukraine, asking for other randonneur groups to support services for the Ukrainian armies in their war effort against Russia. Oleg was given permission by Audax Club Parisien to allow riders from other randonneur clubs around the world to ride a 200k or 300k ACP event in their home country and have the results posted to ACP through the Mariupol/Lviv Randoneur club. Riders would pay a fee to join the Mariupol/Lviv club for the ride which would then be contributed to a Mariupol charity organization supporting the Ukraine troops with bulletproof vests, helmets and tactical first-aid kits. Mariupol has been the site of heavy combat since early on in their war with Russia.
Within a few days, with the support of Dave Thompson and the approval of the RUSA board, we put together a process for RBA regions to join this effort. It was quickly recognized that it would be much easier for US RBAs and riders to work through RUSA, using our current ride registration and results submittal systems and have our collective results be processed and sent on through RUSA. All rides were ACP certified and completed by the end of October which is the end of the ACP year.
Internally, this process took some data wrangling to collect the ride and donation information from RBAs and RUSA results data into the form needed for Mariupol. Rob Hawks, Dave Thompson and Rob Welsh spent more than a few hours putting this information together and working out the kinks. We also needed to handle crediting the ACP homologation number results returned by Mariupol for our riders.
Given the lateness of the season it was very gratifying to see 17 RBA regions respond. 160 riders participated, raising $1,440 from the ride fee. RUSA contributed their standard $5/rider fee for another $800.
On top of this we also received over $3,100 in additional donations from riders and 60 other randonneurs for a total of $5,300 raised. This has been sent on to the Mariupol/Lviv Randonneur club.
RUSA extends a huge thank you to the RBAs and the 220 RUSA members who participated for your time and support for another international randonneuring club in a very worthy cause.
